Luke 4:18 – “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”
Dwight Lyman Moody (February 5, 1837 – December 22, 1899), also known as D. L. Moody, was an American evangelist and publisher connected with Keswickianism, who founded the Moody Church, Northfield School and Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts (now Northfield Mount Hermon School), Moody Bible Institute, and Moody Publishers. One of his most famous quotes was “Faith makes all things possible… Love makes all things easy.” Moody gave up his lucrative boot and shoe business to devote his life to revivalism, working first in the Civil War with Union troops through YMCA in the United States Christian Commission. In Chicago, he built one of the major evangelical centers in the nation, which is still active. Working with singer Ira Sankey, he toured the country and the British Isles, drawing large crowds with a dynamic speaking style. (source: Wikipedia) “

Summary
This YouTube video features a reading of the historic sermon “The Glorious Gospel” by 19th-century evangelist D.L. Moody, based on Luke 4:18 (quoting Isaiah 61). Delivered as Jesus’ inaugural message in the Nazareth synagogue, it emphasizes the gospel as “good tidings” of grace, salvation, and liberation through Christ—preaching to the poor, healing the brokenhearted, freeing captives, restoring sight to the blind, and proclaiming the “acceptable year of the Lord.” Moody highlights how Jesus intentionally omitted Isaiah’s reference to “the day of vengeance” (the second coming and judgment), underscoring that now is the time for mercy, not wrath. The sermon portrays the gospel as a joyful, transformative message that defeats sin, death, and despair, offering eternal security through faith in Christ’s sacrifice. It uses vivid analogies (e.g., a prairie fire escape, a debt-forgiven Russian youth) to illustrate unearned forgiveness and urges immediate surrender to Christ.
The 26-minute audio reading by pastor Joel Griffis is clear and engaging, with minor modern adaptations for clarity.
Key Points
- Jesus’ Purpose in the Gospel (0:09–4:30): Christ announces His mission with sixfold anointing: to preach good news to the meek/poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives and the bound, give sight to the blind, and declare the year of God’s favor—contrasting with the destructive spirits that afflicted Old Testament prophets like Moses and Elijah.
- The True Meaning of “Good Tidings” (4:33–12:37): The gospel isn’t gloom but joy; it brings light to faces darkened by sin. It conquers ultimate enemies: death (its sting removed by Christ’s resurrection), sin (washed away by His blood), the grave (replaced by eternal life), and judgment (borne by Christ on the cross).
- Victory and Security in Christ (12:41–18:16): Believers stand safe amid life’s “prairie fire” of trials by anchoring at Calvary. The gospel guarantees resurrection and freedom, urging all to proclaim it boldly.
- The Free Gift of Salvation (18:16–26:43): Illustrated by a story of a Russian youth whose debts were anonymously paid by the czar (mirroring Christ’s atonement). Salvation is unmerited grace—surrender your will to receive it. The sermon closes with a prayer for enlightenment and blessing on hearers.
This sermon, originally from Moody’s revivalist era, remains a powerful call to embrace the gospel’s hope before the day of reckoning arrives.
